Hurricane Alex 2010 Tampering Gulf of Mexico Recovery

Hurricane Alex is tampering with the recovery efforts of the US Coast guard and BP in the Gulf of Mexico.

Hurricane Alex is making the cleanup operation extremely difficult, and members of the US Coastguard and BP have had no choice but to cease their efforts, meaning that crude has been washing up on beaches throughout the Gulf, and also on the coastlines of Mississippi and Louisiana.

The Governor of Louisiana Bobby Jindal is far from happy with the way ‘this war’ has been fought, he said, ‘The only question they need to ask themselves is are they in this war to win it or not? It’s as simple as that. You’re either get in this war to win it, cut through the red tape and bureaucracy and get it done. Don’t admit defeat. Don’t accept it as inevitable that there has to be oil in our wetlands. Don’t give up on Louisiana’s seven thousand miles of shoreline.’

However, a large vessel has arrived to help with the cleanup effort. The ‘A Whale’ can collect up to 500,000 barrels of water a day, which is considerably more than what the other ‘vessel’s’ are collecting at the moment. The two much smaller ‘vessel’s’ in the Gulf at the moment are collecting just 24,000 barrels a day.

Apart from the arrival of the ‘A whale’ the news is not getting better for the operation. Forecasters expect that Hurricane Alex is the first in a series of hurricanes that are expected to hit this season, and this is going to cause continued problems to the cleanup operation.
