John Isner Nicolas Mahut Longest Tennis Match Ever – When viewers tune into Wimbledon today, they will not be looking for Murray, Nadal or Federer but instead they will find themselves tuned into court 18, where the longest match in history between John Isner of the USA and Nicolas Mahut of France is still in action.

If you decide to follow Wimbledon coverage regardless of your knowledge of Tennis -any sporting event that lasts for 10 hours (with only short breaks) is an astonishing feat. The game has overthrown all other world records, with the last set lasting for around 7 hours alone, which by itself eclipses the previous record.

The previous record of the longest match stood at 6 hours and 33 minutes in the 2004 French open. Isner and Mahut have played a phenomenal 881 points with 662 of those points coming in the last set, Isner now holds the world record for most aces in one game at 98 but Mahut will be trying to gain the record sitting on a mere 95 aces, both overshadow the previous record of 78.

Play was suspended on the 23rd June at 9pm due to a combination of unfavorable light, and the recommendation of Wimbledon’s own doctor who stated it would be unsafe to let the two play any longer, without health implications.

Fans chanted ‘we want more’ and Mahut said that he wanted to play on but could not physically see the ball anymore. Wimbledon has no fifth set tiebreakers, which means regardless of the score one player has to win by two clear points, and up to 59-59 neither Isner nor Mahut could win two straight points. The winner of the game will play Thiemo De Bakker of the Netherlands who himself went to a fifth set 16-14 tie-break.

Update:

The match ended in favor of John Isner, who won the final set 70–68. The match lasted eleven hours and five minutes.
